FAQs

Below is a selection of answers to general questions that we are often asked.

I've played a lot of hockey - will the standard be high enough for me?

The 1st XI plays highly-competitive hockey, just missing out on promotion in the 2019/20 season. As such, this season we are heavily recruiting for talented and experienced players to push the standard of UCL Hockey. If you're interested, drop a message to our Facebook page to find out about getting involved in our preseason.

Additionally, First XI players are encouraged to play some Saturday hockey with the UCL Alumni Club - the London Accies. The Accies have several squads, the First XI being an extremely high standard and a great challenge for experienced players.

When are the Welcome Fair Sessions?

On the 1st October 2022, we'll be attending the 2022 Welcome Fair where you will find our stall in the main quad.

On Wednesday 5th October, we will have our Trials for intermediate and experienced players looking to play in the 1XI or 2XI. You will play some small-sided games so that we can see which team would suit you best (don't worry, there's plenty of opportunity to change teams throughout the season). You can find our welcome events scheduled on the Student Union What's On Calendar/social media pages as and when events are confirmed.

Can I really join if I'm a complete beginner?

Yes! There are plenty of club members who had never touched a hockey stick until university. If you've never played hockey before, come to our welcome sessions during Freshers Week and try it out.

How much does it cost to join?

After Welcome Sessions, if you decide to stay with the club you'll need to purchase Club Membership to compete for UCL. A competitive membership will likely cost around £100 although this has not been confirmed yet.

The membership fee lets us pay for playing kit, training pitches, match pitches, coaches, umpires and the clubhouse. Additionally, travel costs on TFL for matches will be reimbursed by the UCL Union when you give your captain your Oyster history.

When do we train?

Normally, all 3 teams train on Monday evenings from 6 pm.

What else do we do beyond hockey?

The Annual Ball, London Varsity, a variety of social events, the annual summer tour abroad, the Mandy Walker Alumni BBQ, volunteering and charity events to name a few. Socially, we are strongly linked with the Women's Club too, so this club is one of the biggest social groups on campus. UCLMHC is the perfect place for you, whether you're serious about hockey, just want to meet some new people or somewhere in between.

If you have any other questions, please drop us a message on Facebook or Instagram and we'll get back to you ASAP.
